Medical Cannabis in Alabama: What You Need to Know Before Your Appointment

Is Medical Cannabis Legal in Alabama?

Yes. Alabama passed the Darren Wesley "Ato" Hall Compassion Act, which allows licensed physicians to certify qualifying patients for medical cannabis use. Dr. Mulkey is among the initial group of physicians granted certification privileges under this program.

Medical cannabis in Alabama is strictly regulated. Products must be obtained through licensed Alabama dispensaries and patients must carry their registry identification card at all times when in possession of medical cannabis.

Who Qualifies?

Alabama law recognizes a specific list of qualifying conditions including chronic or intractable pain, PTSD, anxiety, depression, epilepsy, multiple sclerosis, Parkinson's disease, spinal cord injury, ALS, Crohn's disease, sickle cell anemia, Tourette's syndrome, HIV/AIDS-related symptoms, cancer-related symptoms, and terminal illness among others.

A full evaluation with Dr. Mulkey is required to determine whether you qualify. Certification is not guaranteed.

What Does the Process Look Like?

The process begins with a scheduled evaluation appointment with Dr. Mulkey. He will review your medical history, discuss your symptoms and prior treatments, and determine whether medical cannabis is an appropriate option for your condition.

If you are certified, Dr. Mulkey will complete the necessary documentation through the Alabama Medical Cannabis Commission patient registry. You will then be able to obtain products through a licensed Alabama dispensary.

What Does It Cost?

Medical cannabis evaluations are cash-pay services and are generally not covered by insurance.

New patient evaluation and certification: $300
Existing patient evaluation and certification: $200
Quarterly follow-up visit: $100

A Word on Faith and This Decision

We encourage every patient considering this option to approach the decision prayerfully and thoughtfully.

"If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally." — James 1:5 (KJV)
