Headaches vs Migraines: How to Tell the Difference

Headaches vs Migraines: How to Tell the Difference

If you have ever been told your migraines are just bad headaches, you are not alone. It is one of the most common misunderstandings in pain management and one of the most frustrating for the people living with them. Headaches and migraines are not the same condition. They do not have the same causes, the same symptoms, or the same treatment. And for the many patients who have spent years being undertreated, that distinction matters more than most people realize.

What Is a Headache?

A headache is pain or pressure in the head, scalp, or neck. Most headaches are tension headaches, caused by stress, dehydration, poor posture, or muscle tightness. They are uncomfortable but they are generally manageable with rest, hydration, and over-the-counter medication.

Tension headaches tend to feel like a dull, steady ache or a tight band around the head. They do not usually come with nausea, light sensitivity, or the kind of debilitating pain that keeps you in a dark room for hours.

What Is a Migraine?

A migraine is a neurological condition. It is not simply a bad headache. It is a complex event in the brain that can cause severe throbbing pain, usually on one side of the head, along with a range of other symptoms that have nothing to do with your head at all.

Common migraine symptoms include nausea and vomiting, extreme sensitivity to light and sound, visual disturbances known as aura, dizziness, difficulty concentrating, and fatigue that can last for days after the headache itself has passed. Many migraine sufferers describe a distinct warning phase before the pain begins and a recovery phase afterward that leaves them feeling drained and foggy.

Migraines can last anywhere from a few hours to several days. For some patients they are occasional. For others they are chronic, meaning they occur fifteen or more days per month. Chronic migraine is a recognized medical condition and it deserves real treatment.

Why Does the Difference Matter?

Because the treatment is different.

If you are treating a migraine like a tension headache you are likely managing symptoms rather than addressing what is actually happening. And if you have been told to simply take more ibuprofen and rest, you deserve to know that there are interventional options that may provide meaningful, lasting relief.

At Gardendale Pain & Wellness, we see patients who have lived with debilitating headaches for years before anyone took the time to properly evaluate them. Nerve blocks, in particular, can be highly effective for patients with chronic migraines and cluster headaches. These targeted injections work by interrupting the pain signals responsible for triggering migraine episodes and can significantly reduce both the frequency and severity of attacks.

When Should You See a Doctor?

If your headaches are interfering with your daily life, if over-the-counter medications are no longer helping, or if your headaches are becoming more frequent or more severe, it is time to talk to someone.

You should also seek immediate care if your headache comes on suddenly and severely, if it is accompanied by fever, stiff neck, confusion, or vision changes, or if it follows a head injury. These can be signs of something more serious.

A Word of Encouragement

Living with chronic pain of any kind is exhausting. It can affect your relationships, your work, your faith, and your sense of self. If you have been struggling with migraines and feel like you have run out of options, we want you to know that you have not.

God did not design you to simply endure. He created you to live fully. And while we cannot promise that every treatment works for every patient, we can promise that Dr. Mulkey and our team will take the time to truly understand what you are going through and build a plan around your specific needs.

You deserve more than being told to live with it.
